149801 State Park Rd – Wausau, WI 54401
If you live in or around Wisconsin you’ve probably heard of Rib Mountain for its skiing in the winter at Granite Peak. This is certainly one of the premier places to visit in Wisconsin. Located at the top of the ski run is Rib Mountain State Park. With miles of trails, trees, and rocks to adventure among, it quickly has become one of my new favorite parks in the state.
Visiting Rib Mountain State Park
Rib Mountain is located just over 2 hours north of Madison in Wausau. Wausau is a recreation boom town with the charm of a small mountain town. The city is constantly investing in outdoor recreation with a kayak park, mountain biking trails, and miles upon miles of trails to hike.
Hiking at Rib Mountain
Rib Mountain has nearly 12 miles of trails to explore with many amazing viewpoints to take in overlooking the city. Due to the area’s nature, it is expected that the trails can be pretty rocky and have many elevation changes. Hiking boots that go up to the ankle might be a good idea for added support. Maps of the trail system can be found here and are posted at the park. Trails are color-coded and marked very well along the path.
Information for Rib Mountain State Park
Open from 6 AM to 11 PM, Rib Mountain State Park is a day-use park. Don’t worry, there are many places to camp around Wausau that make getting to Rib Mountain a breeze. The price of admission into the park is different whether you’re a resident or non-resident and are looking for an annual or day-use pass. You can see a price breakdown here.
